It’s finally here, in spoiler-free fashion, we review ASAP Rocky’s new album
ASAP Rocky (Rakim Athelston Mayers) finally drops his delayed album, “Don’t Be Dumb“, after numerous setbacks and a flurry of misfires and short-lived songs. In the run-up to its release, we saw him remove a video from YouTube prolonging the project for some months.
The album was further hyped for a collaborative alliance between Mayers and Beetlejuice director, Tim Burton, who worked on the artwork. Now it’s here, what do we think?
‘Don’t Be Dumb’: Review and Verdict
Don’t Be Dumb is definitely pumped up for effect, though in several areas, it feels remedial and filled with safe deliveries. For the most part, its production is fresh and includes some bass-heavy tracks which plump and mask Mayers’ shortcomings.
Rocky’s flow is wildly commonplace with a twist of a safe bet to moments that show promise, like on Playa and No Trespassing. While the production often lives up to expectations, some periods sound formulaic, mostly owing to the rapper’s vocals. While it can be experimental at times, like on Punk Rocky and Robbery, it’s missing a lot.
