Opinion: The Rich Exploit the Belfast Riots from a Smug Distance

With unrest in Belfast, years of foreign interference have strengthened the far-right

Rioters throughout the country lost the right to be called protesters when they began endangering the lives of others. As they instil fear in our communities, torching property and screaming to divide, their motives, fashioned by a ruthless few, showcase their lack of autonomy in a world where the truth is at our fingertips.

Homes in Belfast have been damaged beyond repair, leaving residents fearing fro their life.

However, the sycophantic programming of artificial intelligence has, at their behest, allowed users to manipulate search results, with some platforms enabling hate speech to an immeasurable degree. Unrest in Belfast has been brewing for some time, but it did not begin in Ireland โ€” it began in mainland UK.

Foreign Intereference

The antagonists, a bunch of hooligans turned criminals, wear underwear as balaclavas, run at the sight of water cannons, all the while taking pleasure in their contribution to the dismantling of society. Chanting ‘stop the boats’ and ‘stop the invaders’, their shameful behaviour mirrors these same slogans with baneful intent.

People of colour fear walking down the street thanks to random attacks and the normalisation of racism in mainstream politics. At the forefront of these efforts is Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (also known as Tommy Robinson), whose inflammatory language has, for years, helped cultivate an environment of schism.

Funded by millionaires such as Robert J Shillman, Raheem Kassem, Elon Musk and the Middle East Forum, among others, they’re not helping the situation, as Yaxley-Lennon continues to run amok, sowing discord and planting the seeds for a culture of disharmony. Those they influence, mostly the unemployed, have been described by some judges as โ€œplainly racist and/or anti-Muslimโ€.

Hate Crimes and Anti-Muslim Sentiment

In one case, a man, David Gallacher, aged 37 years at the time, repeatedly kicked a Muslim woman, killing her unborn twins, was labelled a “shabby racist”. In 2018, Darren Osbourne was charged with murder following what the courts found was online radicalisation; he injured several Muslims, resulting in the murder of one. A judge said: “After your arrest, you celebrated and smiled. You said while you were being restrained: โ€œIโ€™ve done my job, you can kill me now.โ€

ABC: “Anti-immigration figures seizing Belfast outrage to push thier cause.”

This, alongside particular news outlets, has seen xenophobia spiral out of control; this so-called impartiality is now an accomplice to the meltdown of society. In such times as these, unity is essential, but the press is far from cultivating it. It won’t be long until โ€” unless Parliament intervenes โ€” the flames of fascism become a permanent fixture within the United Kingdom, an ideology it claims to be against. After years of financing and verbal support, it’s time the government protected its citizens from the far-right by clamping down on foreign interference.
