UK rap sensation Fakemink is hard to reconcile with the viral hype, and the sound does not match expectations

Fakemink is having his moment — one that could go on thanks to a niche he’s carved out. This was further catapulted into the limelight thanks to a performance with Drake, and you would be mistaken for thinking he’s a musician to take interest in. But as you’ll hear on his latest drop, Look At Me, it’s hard to accept the results of the hype.

His most notable work is LV Sandals, and for good reason; the production is incredible — the vocal and lyrical efforts, however, are far from comparable to existing seminal works. You’ll hear the same with his latest joint.

Look At Me is of a similar production calibre, one of the few pieces that could be considered impressive. However, his rap skills raise eyebrows. Of course, it’s cloud rap, so its shortcomings can be forgiven as an unpolished, rough-around-the-edges song. Or is it classified as such to let a subpar sound off the hook?

While its melody has potential — like much of his back catalogue — it finishes as quickly as you turn it on. Only a few days ago, the artist claimed he is “better than every rapper”, a statement that is hard to believe when you hear his own performance.

This declaration was made on the belief that, because he creates everything himself (beats, lyrics, etc) — something spitters should be doing anyway — he should be regarded as such. This song is a meme at best, and I am left perplexed by Drake’s choice to join him on stage. Perhaps this is all a social experiment?
