Harry Styles releases fourth studio album, “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally”, with mixed results
It feels like forever since Harry Styles released Aperture and announced his new album “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally”. Now that it’s here, what do we think? The English singer-songwriter hasn’t hyped it up like usual and instead has relied on the notable and quintessential sound from the lead single, albeit with some caveats.
The project is produced by Styles alongside frequent collaborators Kid Harpoon (Florence + the Machine, Miley Cyrus, Phoebe Bridgers) and Thomas Hull.
Review: Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally
Harry Styles is a proven talent, but with a specific taste aimed at a certain demographic — his fans, of course. Having released his fourth studio album, once again it’s chock-full of epizeuxes and catchy hooks, though it often falls short in several areas. His latest effort deviates from his prior catalogue for good reason, though it tries and only just pushes past adequate.
For the most part, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally is performed with appreciable vocals against a production that often sits at a median point, though it upsets the balance of Styles’ performance. The project is formed with a thematic quality in mind, but is held back by a sonic disconnect, rendering it forgettable despite a pleasant execution at times, like on Carla’s Song.
The Verdict
Pros: Strong vocals, cohesive sound.
Cons: Mediocre production and hooks.
“Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally” feels like all parties involved have settled for a canvas of mediocrity, and though it cohesively connects, that doesn’t mean the music hits. Opening track “American Girls“, which shows promise but degrades with time, sets up “Ready, Steady, Go!“, which also quickly depreciates. There’s a definite throwback to the time of disco-era mania and 80s synth-heavy sounds, but it’s profligate for an artist with the resources at his disposal.
A few tracks have the potential to make it onto a playlist, but it largely sounds like a disposable cache of unused music. Harry Styles can do better, and perhaps he needs a refresh and a new start with a new team.
