It’s been a wonderful month for lovers of the jazz genre, with several unveilings dropping this week. In addition to this treasure trove, there’s another one to add to the list from Immanuel Wilkins.
‘Blues Blood’ is the new release from the acclaimed saxophonist, and marks his third album in four years. Inspired by a nostalgic yearning for the past, these emotions underpin the basis for each composition.
Influences And What Does It Sound Like?
The title is directly inspired by a quote from Daniel Hamm in 1964, who was part of a group of boys falsely accused of murder. As they awaited trial, they were beaten by prison guards, which influenced the statement: “I had to, like, open the bruise up and let some of the blues [bruise] blood come out to show them.”

The first single, taken from his latest project ‘Dark Eyes Smile’ features Cecile McLorin Salvant, in what is described as a poignant tribute to those long gone.
In this new round of sonically visceral canvases, Wilkins exudes a kind of musical facsimile infused with his own identity. Bold and gracefully demanding, a warmth of familiarity glazes over one’s senses. It is as enchanting as it is engaging, replete with exuberant charm.
