Jack Harlow is back with a new album — this time, he switches up his flow for someone else’s
Having taken time out following his move from Louisville to New York City, Jack Harlow says he felt a surge of creativity running through him. This culminated in his new album, Monica. Recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in NYC, an establishment used by juggernauts such as Taylor Swift and Jimi Hendrix.
Monica: Review and Verdict
Jack Harlow has always been a spare part of the hip-hop scene, a Temu-adjacent element. With little to nothing to say other than sounding like Drake, we expected that would be his motif once again. And alas, that’s exactly what he’s released.
RELATED STORY: Jack Harlow Adds Fresh Album To The Portfolio
While the music channels a laid-back melodic vibe, the vocals and songwriting are cliché, riddled with formulaic constructs that pretend more than they provide. With little substance in the Harlow box already, follow-ups will ultimately be profligate.
While there is some value, it’s largely background-style music and random soundscapes you stumble upon later. Ultimately, it would be a better project if someone else took the lead. Monica’s limited range — coupled with an attempt to be like everyone else — has not paid off.
