Review: ‘Muddy Waters Too’ – Redman Is Wicked on New Album

One of rap’s finest returns to form on new LP with an incredible rhyme fest for hip-hop fans.

Finally, Redman’s Muddy Waters Too is available to download and rappers have a lot to live up to thanks to Mr Noble. His pen-game remains as strong as ever, with a string of albums that are a purists dream. As one of the premier lyricists, this project is highly anticipated.

Redman & Method Man – LaLaLa

The fact the New Jersey rapper is still kicking it at 54 years old is inspiring, but if you’ve been following Gilla for years, you’ll know that this is not a surprise. Media momentum is brewing and there are no signs he is slowing down following the reveal of a new video for Im On Dat B******t.

There is no doubt he is a pioneer of a niche space within hip-hop, having fostered a platform for artists to eccentrically express themselves. This year, he’s back to show he’s not slowing down through a cluster of high energy songs.

Background

His comedic output is as legendary as his bars, inspiring rappers like Eminem to introduce a similar style to their performances.

After signing with Def Jam, his access to resources further enhanced his profile. From Whut? Thee Album to Doc’s Da Name 2000, his run of form goes beyond the limits most artists aspire to. His style even caught the attention of Christina Aguilera and rock group The Offspring, who tapped him for Dirrty and Original Prankster. This further catapulted the already well respected lyricist to new heights.

By 2010, Noble left the label in pursuit of new pastures. He felt it had lost its way, including the family-like atmosphere that was cultivated. Constant staff changes eventually led to the departures of Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles, two influential figures at the company. This was a turning point for the rapper, pushing him to release independent music.

Sound Profile

He’s putting in the work and is no stranger to punchlines and double entendres. This time around, the Funk Doctor Spot focuses more on style, aligned with his unique identity.

The tracklist is thirty-two songs long, an impressive feat in today’s world. Redman has indeed made up for the delays on a project where he profusely expresses himself without pressure to conform. He does this in his own idiosyncratic way, speaking on the state of hip-hop, highlighting the troubles with mumble rap deliveries.

Soopaman Luva 7 arrives as a launch-day promo and continues the Newark native’s series about a superhero who enjoys hooking up.

Redman – Ignant

Hearing ‘WKYA’ blurted out by vocals of the radio DJ cements this as an event and what a throwback it is. On Aye, the track begins with this announcement, showcasing the rapper’s quintessential flow and trademark sound.

Returning to his witty wordplay he highlights the need for a higher code of skill. On Don’t You Miss, he underlines this notion, something that continues throughout the entire record.

Redman ft Snoop Dogg – Kush

On Ignant, a crazy beat produced by Theory Hazit serves as the perfect instrumental for the artist and is one for hardcore fans. It then slides into classic Reggie on Uncle Quilly, and really, these skits are what truly make his albums.

Lalala with Method Man, is the standout track and a few of the reasons that make this album impressive. Its phenomenal beat, filled with metaphors galore stands alongside some of the best in their discography. His trademark fire contributions, often laced with humour, like “I’m on my toes like a midget in a urinal,” alongside Meth’s “You came to beef with a butter knife, that don’t cut it,” just make us want Blackout! 3 tomorrow.

Verdict

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Our reaction is simply this: it is a return to form for Redman. Having produced many tracks himself, it’s clear this has had a profound effect on his creative process. While it’s no match for his earlier long plays, it definitely works well and fills a rap-sized hole.

Featuring production from Rockwilder and appearances from his contemporaries, including Snoop Dogg and Kid Capri, there’s much to like. There’s even a supergroup cut with Shaq, Naughty By Nature and Rah Digga.

Sonically, there’s a blend of string-led, snare-heavy funk mixed with a peak 1990s hip-hop sound. But who will like this album? True Redman fans and boom-bap heads looking for a laid-back project to vibe to.

In short, the lyricist’s work is sure fire, all without bowing to industry trends. With the doc, you’re guaranteed to get some intrinsically safe music and on Muddy Waters Too, he keeps his head above water, stepping out to heat up.

Where to Buy Vinyl and Stream

Muddy Waters Too can be streamed immediately via Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon. Vinyl copies are coming. In a recent Instagram post, the rapper posted a link for pre-orders where you can also buy merchandise.

It was released on Gilla House Records and Riveting Music.

  1. Love this album. It’s been a while since we had a new classic from Red. Just like you said, this is for the true fans. It’s also great that he sounds like Red and not most rappers of today. I downloaded it but I really want a CD so that I can ensure I keep this classic for years to come.
