Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre Reward Fans With New Single ‘Gorgeous’

Jhene Aiko collaborates with legendary hip-hop icons for a nostalgic rap treat.

Snoop Dogg (real name Calvin Broadus) has returned, but did he ever leave us? The West Coast legend has been a frequent media hound, remaining in the public eye for everything from commentary to even the Olympics.

But this year, after touting his new album titled Missionary, the rapper has resurfaced to the delight of fans everywhere.

His new single, Gorgeous, features Jhene Aiko and his longstanding historical compadre, Dr. Dre. With music by the latter, all the stylistic components of the NWA producer are instantly recognisable.

What It Sounds Like

It bears all the hallmarks of a classic Snoop song: deep piano chords evoke nostalgia in tandem with a melodic charm synonymous with the Californian hip-hop artist.

At 53-years-old, he has retained his definitive composure, yet this time he pushes the boundaries to usurp his most recent releases. Dare we say he has summoned the ambience of his former era? If so, the album could be a decent project to look forward to.

Aitko’s contribution to the track is a powerful catalyst for the single’s sonic, 90s-esque euphoria. Her presence emulates the vocals of those who featured on early Death Row music, with a contemporary addition.

The Music Video

Despite there being no word on official visuals, a flashy lyric video has been released in its stead.

Verdict

Gorgeous is an infectiously good single, melodiously imbued with the classic trimmings of a Doggy Dogg joint. His delivery and flow retain the integrity we associate with the Broadus sound—something that will especially impress old-school heads.

The unfortunate takeaway here is that there seems to be little evolution from old habits. Rather than move forward to embrace a new musical epoch, there is a desire to step back and press for the good old days.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but this latest outing is meant to be a sign of what we should expect.

Snoop’s skill level is still of a high calibre, but the production could’ve taken advantage of contemporary trends. It sounds good, but not everyone may appreciate it.

One can contend that this is Dre’s stylistic artistry, but it could also be interpreted as a lack of progression.

Album News and Themes

His new album, Missionary, is set to be released December 13th, 2024, on all major streaming platforms.

The rapper has also been busy elsewhere with Tha Eastsidaz.

Its sound can be described as a return to his roots, incorporating a style found in his earlier releases, especially from the Death Row era.

Broadus acquired Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group, whose parent company is Blackstone. The move also included the purchase of his music catalog and also the label’s historical releases. He later said he hopes to expand the company’s influence.

The entire album has been produced by Dr. Dre. It marks the first collaborative effort between the two since his smash hit debut, Doggystyle.

Recent collaborations include songs with Ice Cube.

The upcoming long play will consist of 15 tracks, reading like a classic compilation. It will feature appearances from 50 Cent, Jelly Roll, Eminem, Sting, Tom Petty, and Method Man, among others.

Where Can I Stream and Purchase the Album?

In true genre style, you can pick up a vinyl copy of the album directly from Interscope Records, which is available in both an exclusive blue or white press. A digital version of the album, along with a CD, is also available for pre-order.
