From sci-fi and comedy to drama — some surprise announcements have been made
Autumn is shaping up to be quite a ride for film lovers. Not only is there an array of genres at play, but some of your favourite actors are returning, too. We run down what you need to see.
“The Running Man”
Director: Edgar Wright
Starring: Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, David Zayas
Glen Powell is the actor Hollywood is forcing on us right now. I don’t see the hype — however, he headlines this fresh adaptation of The Running Man, Stephen King’s (penned as Richard Bachman) first major jump into science fiction writing. The film follows the protagonist through the city after signing up for a game show to pay for his child’s medical bills. Despite my reservations, I’ll give this one a go.

“Spinal Tap II: The End Continues”
Director: Rob Reiner
Starring: Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, John Michael Higgins, Harry Shearer.
In true mocumentary style, they’re back. The film that inspired Ricky Gervais’ The Office sees the aging rock band Spinal Tap return for one last jaunt.
Following a 15-year hiatus, the crew gear up for one last concert. Special guest appearances are to be expected, including Paul McCartney.

“One Battle After Another”
Directed: Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring: Leonardo Di Caprio, Regina Hall, Tetyana Taylor, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Chase Infiniti.
Leonardo Di Caprio finally teams up with director Paul Thomas Anderson for a whimsical comedy following a group of so-called revolutionaries.
After some time apart, Bob Ferguson’s (Di Caprio) daughter is kidnapped. The story follows the washed out fighter as he attempts to track down the people who kidnapped her, enlisting the help of old compatriots along the way.
The question on everyone’s lips now is, will the director turn a profit for the studio this time?
Hype Meter:
“The Smashing Machine”
Director: Benny Safdie
Starring: Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson
The Smashing Machine sees Dwayne Johnson perhaps get his big break as a serious actor. Everything before has been forgettable.
His new movie sees him perform under the helm of Benny Safdie (Good Time), retelling the life of arguably MMA’s most notorious fighter Mark Kerr.
Johnson is capable of good things, but the box he’s placed himself in does not help. Let’s hope this film lets us see another side to the hulky actor.
Hype Meter:
“Anemone”
Director: Ronan Day-Lewis
Starring: Samantha Morton, Daniel Day Lewis, Sean Bean
Directed by his son, Daniel Day Lewis returns to the silver screen alongside legendary actor Sean Bean, who plays his estranged brother.
It documents the story between families as they navigate the difficulties of trauma from the fall out of conflict — quite possibly The Troubles.
