Liverpool rapper EsDeeKid continues his UK rap run on “Bandit”, but short-form content is his Achilles’ heel
UK rapper EsdeeKid’s new track “Bandit” has caused commotion following its release, and the chatter among UK rap fans reflects mixed feelings. Though largely praised for its electric pace and unwavering, decisive production, it does fall short in some areas.
Review: Fiery Track That Quickly Fizzles Out
Produced by Wraith9, his latest single runs a mere 1:50 and harbours a familiar feeling becoming more ubiquitous by the day.
With songs failing to punch beyond the two-minute mark, there’s a growing fear that the constructs of what made it a breakout genre are wearing thin.
While the components of “Bandit” are great, the substance falls short owing to a lack of atmospheric punch and a failure to build momentum.
These shortcomings could be addressed if the track were gradually built from the introduction to a vamp and beyond.
Music is remembered for its presence, but when the aim is to rack up streams and cut a song to fit firmly within the spectrum of repeat listening, it’s quickly forgotten.
Aside from the aforementioned, the template from which EsdeeKid work has the potential to work its way into a persistent mainstream identity. His disposition and character work well, though the repetitive angles may make a long-form project more difficult to heap praise on.
