Rare style of British boom-bap, featuring singer China Lilly, is music to our ears
Rapper Sindysman liberates another song from his vault of talent, poising him for a new year kick-off. Going out with a bang, both he and his composer partner set themselves up for a 2025 album release.
Moon After Midnight features the creative production skills of Diminutive Arthur and singer China Lilly. A supergroup of sorts, they clinically showcase a lavish set of musical brilliance. The single is taken from their upcoming long play, Austere.
What It Sounds Like
Lilly’s rich and immersive vocals tee up her fellow collaborators, as they bounce to the muffled snares and sampled exploits of an explosive instrumental.
Arthur’s dynamism behind the keyboard is exemplary, continuing a rich tradition of dedication to the craft.
The song is sonically charged with elements syringed from boom-bap, though it also exhibits derivatives from a mid-nineties indie sound. Intrinsically, this is what makes the single a compelling listen, as it demonstrates a command of a cross-generational musical etymology. This link softens the landscape for the rapper to lace the production with a unique class of vocal texture.
Verdict
The three work well together; all understand the assignment, and this totalises the combined application for a truly incredible piece of music. Personally, I feel what’s coming out of Lifelong Records right now is a shining example of the way forward for UK-based rappers and producers.
The scene is often stonewalled by its limitations to perform commercially. But tracks like Moon After Midnight are puzzle pieces missing from the game box in need of publicity. In short, do yourself a favour and download this.
Where to Stream
The new single can be accessed on Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube and Apple Music. Alternatively you can access it via Bandcamp.
