Finnish artist Tatu Gustafsson steps outside to confront himself through an alternative self-portrait project.

Though once in a while, we welcome unique works that are able to circumvent the hilarity of current trends. Tatu Gustaffsson, a Finnish artist has been chasing such feats to evade ubiquitous still photography. His latest work ‘Traffic Situation’ is a presentation of reform within the art scene.
Good ideas take time
The photographer travelled the expanse of Finland seeking out public CCTV weather camera systems to capture self portraits. In total, the project took approximately four years to complete.
In an interview, the artist said: “I never felt like I was the one who has the ability to make well composed and beautiful pictures so I thought that I want to do something that is more conceptual”.
His project can been described as uncomfortable with an “eerie” feel to it. The final product is void of clarity, with an ethereal atmosphere that appears inter-dimensional.
It is thematically composed of both existentialist and nostalgic markers that draws the eye, leaving the viewer with an urge to investigate.
Though the market may seem saturated, Gustaffsson proves there is still room for innovation and talent. In an age where ‘original’ may have reached its peak, his work in the field is a breath of fresh air. Such independent work is a rare pull from a troubled sector.
