New Stephen King horror-comedy movie looks to make cinema fun once again.
There isn’t really much to tell about this incredibly fun-looking film from the mind of Stephen King. As a prolific writer in creating fun dynamic stories with spooky themes, he has tapped into a market that offers said experience without the scares; the exception being, The Shining.
The Monkey, a horror-comedy, is his latest big screen adaptation. Based on a short story taken from an anthology of stories titled, Skeleton Crew, it promises to unleash his trademark narrative.
What’s the synopsis of The Monkey?
Its trailer is an explosive (and I use that word literally) amalgamation of absolute ridiculousness, replete with an expressive antagonist of equal character. The plot follows Hal and Bill, twin brothers who stumble upon their father’s vintage toy monkey (you know, the one with the cymbals that clap and scream) in the attic of their childhood home.
Following the discovery of this hideous monstrosity, horrifying and mysterious deaths begin to happen within the family. Later, (IT style) the two brothers receive word that the monkey is back, ready to wreak havoc on their childhood town.
The Trailer
The trailer starts with a brief back story of what is to come, followed by the protagonist experiencing a bloody scene. This is then followed by a pram set on fire, a woman diving into a pool with live wires, and a TV falling off a roof, barely missing its target. If that wasn’t enough, a man is harpooned by his own stock, while a scorpion climbs into a cup of coffee! This all happens against the backdrop of the cursed toy whimsically playing its miniature drum.
Cast and Director
The twin brothers are both played by Theo James (The Gentleman, Divergent). He is supported by Elijah Wood, who plays Ted Hammerman, and Tatiana Maslany who plays his mother, Lois Shelburn. The film is directed by Osgood Perkins, director of film sensation, Longlegs.
Principal photography was captured between February 5th to March 22nd, 2024, with the movie shot entirely in Vancouver, Canada.
When Will it Be Released?
The Monkey is scheduled to be released February 21st, 2025 exclusively in theatres. Its release will be distributed by Neon Films.
