Washington threatens Tel Aviv with a ban on arms sales, highlighting rifts between the two administrations.
The death toll in Gaza is believed to have surpassed 100,000, with many describing it as an unforgiving assault on Palestinians. To make the situation worse, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused negotiations for a ceasefire with Hamas, while also attacking neighbours Syria and Lebanon.
President Joe Biden warned Israel he will impose an arms embargo on them should they continue to block American aid from entering Gaza. A 30 day notice has been given to allow goods into the region.
However, the US isn’t the only country to voice its concerns. French President Emmanuel Macron called for a complete ban on weapons sales. Many analysts say it is too little, too late, as the American position will permit hostilities to continue, even if aid is able to cross the border.
Preventing A Regional War
With the risk of a broader regional war, key interests, including oil, could face disruption.
This isn’t the first time Washington has imposed an embargo on Israel. During the Six-Day War (5 to 10 June 1967) a ban on weapons sales was implemented to curb Tel Aviv’s advances as they annexed the Golan Heights from Syria, Gaza from Egypt and the West Bank from Jordan.
The US, however, has indicated it will continue to furnish Israel with the capability to maintain its Iron Dome missile system.
More women and children have been killed in in Gaza in one year than any other conflict in recent memory.
