Director Robert Eggers reveals a new trailer for Werwulf and his brand of luxury horror. But will it deliver?
Robert Eggers brings his first film to England, with his first interpretation of a lycan for the big screen in Werwulf, set for release on 25 December 2026. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and frequent collaborators Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson, with support from Jack Morris, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Jan Bijvoet, Ritchi Edwards, and Valeriia Karaman.
The Plot
The plot focuses on a village and its fight for survival against the titular beastly creature in 13th-century England. Expect extreme costuming from one of Eggers’ best hires, Linda Muir (Nosferatu, The Northman), and a feast of visual symbolism. The director wrote it in collaboration with Sjรณn, who co-wrote 2022’s The Northman.
What to Expect
Eggers is a talented filmmaker with a lot of noise behind his name. However, his execution leaves much to be desired. Everything from his grading to his presentation creates a self-contained universe, rich with immersive visuals.

The problem is the storytelling. This, and the direction, can switch off the urge to return to it, with pacing that varies at times. Nosferatu is a good example: with expectations riding high due to both its name and legacy, it fell short in several areas.
As an unofficial adaptation of Dracula, there are creative liberties one can take with such a title. Despite being filled with metaphors and breathtaking cinematography, it ultimately failed to land in several areas and felt more like a light horror than one taking the genre seriously. While his latest effort, Werwulf, appears to be one to watch, weโve been here before with slick trailers and strong marketing.
