Drowning in Discount Design — The Palace x Nike England Collab

Palace’s Nike and England collaboration has drawn criticism for coasting and QC issues

This collaboration is one piece of work, and some fans are divided over it too, though it continues to receive praise thanks to its name. With partnerships now commonplace between brands, for many, the effort hasn’t matched the hype. Nike’s recent tag team with celebrated streetwear name Palace has followed suit.

Average Materials

The motifs and designs stink of something rushed and clichéd. From religious iconography to basic football-style shirts, the price — starting at £50 — does not match the product. This collaboration lacks authenticity. While Nike’s connection to football is obvious, Palace’s interpretation feels superficial, relying on familiar football aesthetics rather than bringing anything particularly fresh to the culture. One of the most expensive pieces is a ghastly jacket overwhelmed by a terrifyingly ugly font and two oversized logos. It’s made up of the following materials: Body: 55% wool, 35% polyester, 10% rayon; Sleeves: 100% leather; Lining: 100% polyester; Ribbing: acrylic/wool/elastane blend. This is £759.

Quality Control Issues

Put quite simply, more than an oversight on their part, it’s a perfunctory drop designed with green in their eyes. We’re not the only ones to quip about their motives — many have pointed out quality-control issues such as uneven logo lines, while others are lopsided, leaving them looking like counterfeits of their own making.

A Template-Led Brand

While fans of the brand have praised its influences and loud styling, the release isn’t for everyone. Its repetitive religious designs are derivative, especially in a climate where the same patterns are used ubiquitously, resulting in an eye-rolling, trite finish. Palace’s reliance on this leaves them embedded in threadbare territory, and it’s only a matter of time before buyers wake up to their demands that use average materials.
