We have seen an incredible reset of the Kryptonian mythos in just four issues, completely overhauling the Man of Steel

It’s been years! Years! We have been paraded an unchanged and rather campy outfit that is not fit for 2025. However, a fresh new take on the man from Krypton, Absolute Superman (2024), completely mixes, switches and rebrands the franchise.
What’s the Plot of Absolute Superman?
In a nutshell, Kal-El (Superman) gets a very different story; he’s a grifting vigilante bent on revenge against those who oppress people through slavery and gentrification.

These motivations stem from his own experiences on Krypton, where he faced the same difficulties. The superhero is also opposed to anti-climate policies and expends a lot of energy combatting emerging threats, as he experienced in his own home world.
Rather than landing on Earth as an infant, he arrives as a teenager. Crash landing in an escape-pod-style ship, he finds his way to the pale blue dot via a suit engineered by his mother, Lara.
What About the Suit?
The suit also gets a long-awaited and much-needed upgrade and features a modernised appearance in a monochromatic style.

Not only does it enhance his abilities using solar energy, but it is sentient, advising the Kryptonian of incoming threats, giving him calculations to choose from and potentially, acting on its own. Instead of a long, flowing red cape, sunstone crystals form its shape. Oh, and it’s sentient.
Kal-El Gets a Much-Needed Update
Compared to earlier iterations of Superman, this is long overdue. Given that Batman got his Year One reset, the Man of Steel was way past his sell-by-date. Don’t get me wrong, the design is timeless and minimalist, but it belongs in a different era. He was one of the first superheroes, and it says a lot that his suit has only received a handful of minor changes.

Absolute Superman subtly overhauls this bygone look, keeping long-time fans happy while opening the door to new readers. If you begin with this fresh new Superman and then read a slightly older story, you’ll wonder why this didn’t happen sooner. This leads me to their other characters: Wonder Woman and The Flash. Their costumes are still rooted in the golden age of comic books and could benefit from a sleeker, more modernised refresh.
Will There be a Movie Adaptation?
Regarding James Gunn. This begs the question: why stick with the old look when we knew a reboot was around the corner? Let’s hope DC Comics continues with this magnificent new take; not only is the story a thrilling ride, but the character development, shifting dynamics, and the reintroduction of an old foe all pave the way for a sensational range of potential adaptations.
Will there be a movie adaptation? I sure hope so. Having dropped this unbelievable reinvention of the new mythos (one that potentially ditches the Clark Kent persona), it’s hard to go back.
