Alessia Cara’s “Dead Man” Is A Powerful Pop Anthem

The singer delves into the characteristics of a relationship on the verge of its end, with a stunning music video to match her flawless performance.

In the era of generics, the fleeting mode of artists who are actually good can sometimes go under the radar. Alessia Cara’s latest jaunt into the pop world, aided by a label known for its artistic patronage and the freedoms they often lend to them, has serviced our ears with the new single “Dead Man.”

Still from the music video.

It is overflowing with a trademark Def Jam Recordings sound, complete with a plump, catchy, mainstream auditory currency that doesn’t rend itself at the behest of making money. Cara is the conductor of her own identity at the helm of a production that really sounds great.

What’s it about?

The pop star augmented the song’s definition when asked about it, stating it follows the ruins of a connection that has run its course: “The song is about a relationship that has come to an end and is like the last finalgrasp of trying to hold onto what is left of this relationship”.

Cara further clarifies the single’s meaning, and how a two way street relationship can only last so long if only one is present for it: “Basically, looking at the other person and metaphorically shaking themand saying ‘I am really trying my best to hold here, but if you don’t want to be held onto then there’s nothing left of this’. I feel like I am talking to a dead man.”
