After several cryptic posts, including memes and shared quotes, singer Pink has finally responded in her own words to the backlash over her stance on Macklemore. Despite having a clear argument, much of her statement is a muddled mess, with contradictions and historical events dragged into the fray, while failing to highlight a single clear case for what Macklemore actually did or said at the Ed Sheeran concert. After claiming she is “not going to litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption,” the “Just Like A Pill” singer then attempts, at considerable length, to pick apart Hamas, Israel, Palestinians, genocide, politics and slogans surrounding the situation in the region.
Father’s Military Record and Gulf War Fumble
Later, she attempts to defend herself with a résumé of subjects and topical talking points, using her father’s military record while also incorrectly referring to the Iraq War as the Gulf War. As she tries to command authority for her ideas, getting such a widely recognised period of recent history wrong is a fumble that lessens her credibility.
In the heat of her rambling, Pink claims she has been standing up for people her “whole career,” including “my own people.” These statements frame Palestinians and Israeli Jews as opposing camps, further pushing the discourse into a dangerous place.
After several more paragraphs of lectures, while attempting to convince her audience that she is not a bad person, she adds even more topics to the discussion, including Jewish families, September 11th, Rosh Hashanah and then family dinner.
