The actor, also known as ‘The Rock’ has been stuck in a loop of family friendly movies due to pre-existing contracts.

Having lost his pull for desired roles, new project, The Smashing Machine, seems to be turning things around.

The Smashing Machine Plot

Playing the role of Mark Kerr in the upcoming biographical sports drama, Dwayne Johnson is completely unrecognisable.

Wearing a wig and facial prosthetics, the former wrestler-turned actor drastically alters his appearance, leaving many gasping at his transformation.

A look at Mark Kerr’s fighting style in the ring

Kerr, who is nicknamed ‘The Smashing Machine’ (for obvious reasons), is regarded as an important figure in the sport, having laid the foundation for MMA and UFC fighting. Arguably, it would not be the behemoth pastime it is today if not for his efforts.

The movie is set to explore the two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion’s life and personal struggles, documenting his addiction to painkillers and relationship to his then wife, Dawn Staples (played by Emily Blunt).

Production Details

The film is directed by Benny Safdie, and was captured between May and August of 2024. Excitingly, the decision to shoot it on 16mm film was taken to enhance a gritty feel that will speak to the atmosphere of the athlete’s ambition.

The score is by Belgian jazz musician Nala Sinephro, who is known for his experimental approach to music.

Reaction

It’s not just the former wrestler’s appearance that makes him look different, but the character development he’s built that’s flipping audience perception of him.

Overall, audiences are excited to see Johnson’s return to a role where he can flex his acting abilities. With some reserved—and rightly so—the pressure is on to see whether he can recapture the intense skillset he is capable of.

Release Date

The film is slated for release worldwide by A24 on 3rd October 2025.
