Former Israeli leader says Netanyahu is “reckless” and lacks a clear strategy in his war aims.

The former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, said he suspects Benjamin Netanyahu is dragging the United States into a war with Iran.

In an exclusive interview with Channel 4 News, he said “I think that’s reckless because I’m afraid that if Israel will start a war… America will join in to help Israel”.

No Clear Plan

Olmert feels Tel Aviv’s current leadership is not prioritising a careful, proportionate response, and believes Netanyahu fails to offer a concrete plan. He claims any confrontation with Iran will possibly destabilise Israel and force the United States to intervene.

“Iran is a very aggressive, provocative power that threatens the stability of the Middle East… what needs to be done needs to be done with care, with sensitivity, with responsibility and with a sense of proportion”.

In response to the killing of Hasan Nasrallah, he says such operations will boost national pride but will not provide Israel with a strategic advantage.

When asked about his leadership in the attacks on Lebanon and Gaza, he said: “Not everything that he [Netanyahu] does is bad. Everything – almost everything – that he says is bad”.
