The Marvel comic book characters make their fourth appearance, this time in a retro-looking futuristic world to battle Galactus.
We’ve been waiting for this fresh take on the comic book story, and here it is – The Fantastic Four: First Steps. So far, so good, and although Johnny Storm’s addition feels a little out of place, this is generally a great cast for the gang.
The project has been in development for five years, generating incredible buzz. With comic book and sci-fi fans eagerly anticipating its release, a big-budget movie should surely tide us superhero geeks over for a while. Though the cost has not yet been revealed, it’s reasonable to assume it will stretch past the $150 million mark.
The Trailer
From the moment the doors slide back in the trailer, a lot is happening as we get our first look at the New York City setting for the picture, complete with Jetson-style furniture. Reed Richards sets the tone for the movie, describing how tight their family is, as Sue Storm welcomes a guest to their apartment. We then transition to a clip of The Thing before Johnny Storm exercises his flaming powers.
All in all, it does well to not give away too much, but just enough for us to know that Galactus is coming. The CGI looks good, though that is subject to change when it hits the big screen. When home streaming arrives, an even bigger test awaits.
What’s the Plot of The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Starring Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, the film follows the group in a retro-futuristic 1960s setting. This was chosen to sync it with the original comic book stories of the time; however, this time, we won’t see an origin story, instead, we jump straight into the action with their already established superpowers.
The antagonist this time will be an identifiable Galactus, an alien world-eating being who discovers planets to devour based on the findings of his herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). He is one of the, if not the most powerful Marvel villains. At times, I feel he could be better utilised in other story arcs, rather than fleeting appearances. He will be played by Ralph Ineson. Also making an appearance will be John Malkovich in an undisclosed role.
Director, Music, and Release Details
The trailer announces a theatrical release for July 25th, 2025, and signals the start of the sixth MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be directed by Matt Shakman, known for his work on The Boys, Game of Thrones, and Succession. The film’s score is composed by Michael Giacchino, responsible for the soundtrack for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
It will be distributed by Walt Disney and Motion Pictures, and produced by Marvel Studios.
