Damian McCarthy’s new horror film stars Adam Scott as a novelist in 2026.
Now this looks intriguing, but I’ve been down this road before, and I’m still waiting for a horror film that will truly scare the wits out of me. Jump scares often feel like a cheap attempt to jolt the Amygdala. Adam Scott, however, appears to be stepping out of his comfort zone into varying genres, and it looks like he could deliver this request. In director Damian McCarthy’s Hokum, he takes on the role of a petrified outsider in rural Ireland, alongside the talents of Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Austin Amelio, and Florence Ordesh.
Hokum Plot
The plot centres on Scott’s character Ohm Bauman, a horror novelist who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes. While there, locals warn him that the property is haunted by an ancient witch, which is when he begins experiencing disturbing visions that coincide with a staff member’s disappearance.
Verdict
Based on the trailer, the film’s core themes blend several themes, including grief and folklore, set against the backdrop of a remote rural region. The location, casting, and cinematography appear to capture this atmosphere well, although I remain cautious until a second trailer is released. But I am hopeful it could be the complete film. But I’ve been misled before. Remember The Mummy?
Release Details
Hokum will be released on 1st May 2026, following its SXSW film festival premiere on 14th March. The production companies behind it include Image Nation, Spooky Pictures, Tailored Films, Cweature Features, and Team Thrives. It will be distributed by Neon International.
