Unprecedented flooding caused by Storm Daniel, leaves villages and towns in the region of Derna devastated. ICRC says thousands dead.

The International Committee Of The Red Cross has intervened in Libya with humanitarian assistance following a tragical and fatal flood in the Northeastern part of the country.

Speaking at a United Nations briefing, the Libyan International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ head of delegation has said more than 10,000 people have been injured and that losses are “huge”.

Othman Abdel Jalil, health minister for the region’s administration told journalists: “The number of missing people is in the thousands, and the number of dead is expected to reach 10,000.” With more than 5,000 already missing, Jalil said many neighbourhoods are “inaccessible” and that the circumstances in the city of Derna “are tragic” while the authorities attempt to locate missing people.

Rain brought about by Storm Daniel, which was also responsible for catastrophic flooding in Greece, collapsed two dams, setting off a catastrophic chain of events in Libya’s Derna region.
