New single from one of Hip-Hop’s most celebrated rappers, Lupe Fiasco, is here.
Rather than kick the pedal to a comeback, Lupe Fiasco’s latest song is more irreverent in the face of influencer inspired music than counter culture.
Instead, the 41 year old, real name Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, latches on to a brace of auto-tune rather than the pristine lyricism he is known for. The second single he has released this year, Checkin’ is a follow up to SentRock, a more appropriate promo in the face of mumble rap. Despite his clarity driven flow, Fiasco limits his distinctive results through a delivery that offers more contempt for staying real than what it presents itself as, and his writing suffers for it too.
Though he offers a way to stay relevant, his answer to a landscape that has dramatically changed is to embrace it rather than to stand out. The contrast between what Jaco summons as a solution to the current environment asks the question, what is Hip-Hop anymore? If but a musical genre to appease a pop arena.
