LA-based pop singer Michelle Kash stepped up to the plate and chose the whole table. The musician talks to Stanisland Magazine about her work and more

New York-born, Los Angeles-based artist Michelle Kash has been turning heads with an electrifying catalogue of music since 2019, churning out the best of what she’s got to offer. But is she just getting started? We seem to think so.

Michelle Kash – Salvation (Official Video)

Following her latest single, “Salvation”, a sonically roaring, 1980s-led track, the pop singer further expresses that emotion in an equally atmospheric music video. Kash opens up about her music as we get to know her and her work better.

Interview

Thanks for joining us. What prompted you to move from New York to LA?

“I was in NY writing and doing some shows, but after every show or session I would have some kind of artistic vulnerability crash out that felt really overwhelming and difficult. I was in some kind of identity crisis and spiralling. Everything felt so intense, and I didn’t know how to make sense of it, so I decided to take a break. Months later I met a good friend, and she asked me to sing for her. I did, and she said — what are you doing? This is your destiny. Move to LA. So I did.”

Interview

Since the move, have you noticed a change in the way you compose music?

“I think when I first moved to LA I was doing more collaborative writing, and I am now in a moment where I just love writing when I’m by myself. There is such an intimacy and quietness to it. I don’t know where something’s going, and I’m so interested to know where it will go without anyone else’s influence. It’s been a great experience. I will always love writing with others, though.”

Interview

Congratulations on your new single, “Salvation”. What’s the story behind it? It seems very specific.

“Thank you so much. I was in the process of writing “Salvation” for a while, but it was an experience last year that was the turning point for me to finish the song. It was one of the hardest times in my life. I had a severe concussion from an accident where an ambulance ran a red light with no siren on. I couldn’t tolerate any light or sound; my brain couldn’t process information the same way. My whole world collapsed. And if you’re a musician and songwriter who can’t tolerate sound, even the sound of your own voice, or the sound of water – I mean, there are no words for how challenging it has been. There were some really long dark nights where I just had to hold on. “Salvation” is anticipating and praying for the breakthrough before experiencing it. And I’m still managing that experience and sensitivity. It is a one day at a time thing.”

Interview

It’s far more upbeat compared to the rest of your portfolio. How do you know when it’s time to change the tempo?

“It was very clear from the beginning that I wanted “Salvation” to be upbeat, and to have a different vibe. In a way, I wanted the music to be some kind of life jacket when I felt I was drowning. To have music that was at a slower tempo wouldn’t have served the song, or my experience. “Salvation” is about breaking through even when you don’t connect or have access to the other side of the darkness, but you need something to pull you through. That something was the music.”

Interview

The subject behind it contrasts with the production. How are your fans and playlists receiving it?

“It’s been received really well, and I’ve gotten some really beautiful messages from fans connecting with it.”

Interview

Your vocal delivery has an idiosyncrasy to it; who were your inspirations growing up?

“I grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Fiona Apple, Jewel, and just a lot of different genres. I loved listening to the blues. I’m sure all of these artists made their way in somehow.”

Interview

The music video is incredible and follows the same charged audio aesthetic; do you have plans to continue with this style? It really suits you.

“Thank you so much. I loved shooting the video. The next few songs really do stay in the same theme. I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Interview

How would you describe your music in three words?

“Vulnerable. Cinematic. Seductive.”

Interview

Spill the tea-can you give Stanisland Magazine an exclusive?

“My next few releases have all this central thread of the moon or some kind of celestial event. My next song, “Messin Around”, came out of a really fun, wild night in LA. Can’t wait for you to hear it.”

Interview

Do you have any shows coming up?

“Planning some shows. Be on the lookout 👀”
