The latest preview gives us a taste of what to expect from the cinematic release. But don’t get your hopes up.

It has been a while in the making, but now it’s finally here, and we all have something to say about it.

Minecraft is a game that is able to both calm and horrify at the same time. Its open-world mechanic and creative gameplay have wooed people of all ages.

So, when the block-building game’s movie adaptation was announced, the world went into a frenzy.

It was billed as something to be excited about, with fans of the game equally pumped for the franchise’s transition to the big screen. So, what was the general reaction to it? ‘Eh, meh!’

Why The Hate?

First off, this film looks vaguely familiar. Instead of asking Dwayne Johnson to be in it, they cast Jason Momoa. And instead of Jack Black—well, he returned for what looks like to be a Jumanji spin-off, and yet again, he plays himself, but this time as ‘Steve.’

Honestly, I was expecting something much more…blockier. Now, I understand adaptations need to make certain adjustments for the silver screen, but there doesn’t seem to be an ounce of faithfulness to the video game or the Netflix series. If they can make Lego a success, then surely the same will be appreciated, albeit, somewhat different.

A still of Jack Black from the trailer

One user commented on a Reddit thread with 35,000 upvotes: “It should have been an animated movie like mario not live action.” While another said: “Thats it we’re done, I’m gonna go play fortnite until this blows over”- Villager number 4.”

Obviously, the reaction has been largely negative and it doesn’t look like a movie that will make it out the gate unless they reshoot it. And that’s highly unlikely.

As a live-action casting, it felt incredibly misplaced for something that would have easily pleased viewers as an animation. Even the uninitiated.

Not only did they fail to accommodate the fans (because that’s the most important thing for a game adaptation), but the quality has been neglected too, which, quite frankly, appears wanting.

So, once again, Hollywood shows its illiteracy when it comes to much-loved franchises, but also – creativity.
