Mimikyu takes centre stage alongside new hero Mikiya for a fresh story centred around the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)

Finally, Mimikyu is getting what he deserves! The lovable loner from the world of Pokémon is getting his own feature-length presentation, coming exclusively to cinemas next year, titled Pokémon: Wildcard. The character’s popularity has soared in recent years following social media commentary on his “sad” background, despite already being a favourite among video game players in competitive online play.

New Story, New Main Character

Trading cards have become incredibly popular following lockdown, with fans of the franchise getting into the trading card game (TCG), as well as scalpers buying up huge swathes of product, leading to soaring costs for rare collectables.

The Pokémon Company says the story will centre around a Pokémon Trading Card Game player attempting to become a TCG champion rather than taking part in conventional physical battles, and follows not only the player, Mikiya, but Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon Mimikyu himself. Thanks to STORY inc. (Suzume), Pokémon: Wildcard hopes to bring an alternate world to the franchise to suit lovers of the game who perhaps aren’t fans of the traditional anime, though it is set to remain an all-rounder. However, there’s no indication that Ash Ketchum or Pikachu will return or feature in the latest movie.

The film was announced at the end of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco and is being produced by CloverWorks, the studio behind anime including Spy × Family and Bocchi the Rock!, with character design by Akemi Hayashi (Banana Fish).

Release Date

Pokémon: Wildcard will be directed by Katsuhiko Kitada for a worldwide release in 2027.
