Deadpool 4: Needs a New Lead, Not Ryan Reynolds’ Old Jokes

Opinion: Ryan Reynolds feels like the obvious choice for Deadpool, but there are probably better options

Ryan Reynolds had major potential following his Hollywood rise to fame. The celebrity gauntlet rarely chooses the right talent; instead, it relies on nepotism (get a load of Chris Pratt, too) and, of course, favours for favours. The “Just Friends” actor climbed his way to a status he deserved before it all went to his head. Now he’s, quite simply, stale.

A Limited Acting Range

The Canadian actor did show some promise, until his habitually rigid acting range limited his qualification for many roles. He’s now typecast, failing to expand beyond the comedic, self-parody of himself.

Deadpool is an incredible comic book character, replete with all the usual flaws and tropes one can expect from a superhero, or in this case, an anti-hero. And now there’s a Deadpool 4 in the works…wait, there’s a fourth movie?? That’s right: we’re not only being steered once again by the artistic craft of a one-trick pony, but he’s butchering the beloved character to a point where it’s frustrating to see someone squander the role. There are likely better people out there.

Wade Wilson: A New Chapter

Having shared ideas with T.J. Miller for a fourth instalment, it’s safe to say it’s happening. One way or another, the regenerative character is destined to be forever played by Reynolds, and it’s a real shame that Jim Carrey wasn’t considered years ago. I just can’t look at Deadpool comics and collectibles the same anymore; all I see is the trying-too-hard actor.

Apparently, Ryan Reynolds isn’t exactly fun to work with.

While Shawn Levy has shared his enthusiasm for a new Deadpool movie, Reynolds’ creative differences with Tim Miller and David Leitch, who also wanted more control over their projects, which is only fair—were obvious.

Leitch commented that he does not want to repeat what has already been done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in all honesty, Disney is doing a great job of butchering it. That is another reason why Reynolds shouldn’t be involved, given his repetition of forced humour and the rumoured need for total control on his projects. There needs to be a reset; a fourth movie is pushing it.
