Universal Pictures revealed the movie’s new title, then quickly withdrew it
A now-deleted press release containing upcoming film releases from Universal Pictures revealed that the Brooklyn plumbers will be getting a sequel titled Super Mario World.

At the end of the first movie, the post-credits scene teased the reveal of Yoshi, the lovable egg-eating dino. To add a pinch of accuracy, the green lizard made his debut in the 1990 Nintendo game Super Mario World, lending credence to the now-withdrawn list making sense.

Other films leaked in the document included Shrek and the Minions sequel, but they too have since disappeared from public view.
Nintendo Had No Confidence in Hollywood
The film made its debut in 2023, following months of back-and-forth negotiations between Nintendo and the film studio. The game developer was reluctant to set loose the iconic character, thanks to a flop-and-drop live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins.
The Japanese entertainment behemoth has long been hesitant to unleash their intellectual property, but since the success of the Illumination Studios-driven animation, their confidence in movie-led narratives has changed. Also in the pipeline is a live-action Legend of Zelda film.
When Will it Be Released?
The film is slated for a summer 2026 release, and is currently in production.
