Expanded edition of pop icon Taylor Swift’s ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore’ cannot rescue a lacklustre album
Taylor Swift releases a rehash of her latest album, packaged as The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition, and as deluxe editions go, it just goes to show how easily the term is thrown about nowadays. The new drop is a masterclass in genericity and shows how her brand of pop is falling flatter than an unchlorinated swimming pool.
With only four new songs added, it goes to show just how washed-up a project it is. Were there more songs on the roster, or did we simply get the best of a bad bunch?
Review: Generic, Simple and Not Worth the Wait
As much as Taylor Swift fans and critics are praising “Patient Zero”, that’s not a good thing; it’s a testament to the banality of the entire project and its enduring lack of creativity. “Cleveland!” is another mess of bassline rhythms, built on conventional motifs, as are the sonically dull “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon”; we’ve heard it all before, and there isn’t really anything to analyse or break down in something built upon and chained together by so much simplicity.

There was a general excitement for The Life of a Showgirl, but it is what it is: boring. Donald Trump is far more exciting to listen to, and that’s saying something. With frequent album drops, perhaps it’s time she took some time off to learn and study the greats, because what we got in this new release is subpar given the amenities she has access to.
