Part II of the Caped Crusader’s film saga has been delayed several times: here’s what we know

The Batman aims to change the way we perceive the Dark Knight. Leading the charge is Matt Reeves, who, under the stewardship of James Gunn, introduces a younger Bruce Wayne to the story.

This “brooding” version of the vigilante is widely respected among franchise fans. Overall, Reeves’ interpretation, while not as popular as Christopher Nolan’s iteration, has generally received praise for its cinematography and direction. So, what’s the hold-up?

What We Know So Far

Matt Reeves is set to return as director with a script he co-wrote with Peter Craig and Mattson Tomlin. He is also set to produce alongside Dylan Clark, Peter Safran, and James Gunn, who is directing the new Superman: Legacy feature.

Reeves calls it the “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” suggesting his edition may encompass more than three films, despite his public comments that a trilogy is “still the plan.”

Filming is expected to begin mid-2025, with production set to take place in Leavesden, UK, at Warner Bros. Studios.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman is part of the DC Elseworlds brand, separate from the DC Expanded Universe (DCEU). This means the crime-fighter will not be part of another shared continuity and will remain within a self-contained storyline.

At present, a single poster has been revealed to the public, showing the silhouette of the Caped Crusader against a wintery Gotham backdrop. This strongly suggests (unless the script changes) that we can expect a snowy setting. But what does that mean for the story?

Plot and Potential Villains

So far, the plot is unknown, but there is one thing we know for certain: The antagonist could be one of several villains, with many theorising it will be Mr. Freeze. It’s an obvious call, but remember, Tim Burton’s Batman Returns was set in winter.

A snow-covered city is probably a curveball, acting as a contrast to his rivals. Dr. Victor Fries, PhD can’t shock people if they’re already surrounded by ice and snow; instead, it’s more likely a character such as Hush, or Professor Hugo Strange, or even the Court of Owls will be brought to the screen.

Which Characters Will Return?

Colin Farrell, Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright have all signed on to return as their respective characters. This means The Penguin returns, with the finale of the series potentially tying into the plot of the new film.

Delays Explained and Expected Release Date

Initially scheduled for a 2025 premiere, recent comments by Matt Reeves suggest the movie’s cinema run will begin in October of 2027.

James Gunn took to Threads to clarify and defend the delay, saying “a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” citing Alien, Aliens, and The Terminator franchise. It is now the longest sequel delay between any of the live-action Batman movies.

Another reason for production delays is the Hollywood writers’ strike that took effect in 2022. This put a stop to most productions for months, causing chaos throughout the movie industry. However, as soon as it subsided, The Batman Part II’s script was expedited. Reeves has now reportedly handed in several revisions, though the script is not yet finished. Reeves also oversaw the production of The Penguin series, which is alleged to have disrupted his contribution to the script.

Reeves recently announced “I can tell you that we’ll be shooting this year,” and that “We’re doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by.”

Concerns

Concerned fans believe the film could experience further delays, as Robert Pattinson is set to begin filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey early next year. This means the actor may seek a break between projects, delaying the start of production.

Fans are generally content with the delay, with social media users voicing their support for “quality scripts, while others pointed out The Dark Knight trilogy was “finished in 7 years.”
