Latest Transformers movie gets the animated treatment, bringing it back to its roots for a prequel.
Prior efforts to summon the spirit of the franchise have somewhat failed to build on the exploits of a much-loved generation one. Michael Bay excited fans through its live-action debut, and subsequent features fell off the wagon through convoluted plotlines and lacklustre mechanics, despite having put in a force-to-be-reckoned with CGI effort for the first movie.
What’s the movie about?
It wasn’t long ago that the latest instalment of the franchise was announced, with the Autobots and Decepticons set to battle it out once again. This time, we follow the backstory of Optimus Prime and Megatron, on their home planet of Cybertron. Directed by Josh Cooley, of “Toy Story 4” and “Up” fame, the movie focuses on their early origin story.
What’s the verdict of the trailer?
Fast forward 40 years, and it appears some promise is on the horizon, though some fans are rightfully sceptical regarding what is to come. And rightfully so, because this movie looks terrifyingly awful. Just when you thought Hollywood couldn’t butcher another intellectual property, they produced another flailing pile of nothing. Instead of reversing damage done to the characters in recent times, progression towards the inevitable Disney style aesthetic has been conjured, and perhaps thanks to the popularity of Illumination style animation; which, has its place – but not here.
