The US has confirmed it has withdrawn all its bombers from RAF Fairford following an alleged terror plot
The US has now removed all its bombers from RAF Fairford, returning them to the United States following the alleged terror plot. The Pentagon confirmed the move in a statement but did not explain why.
Pentagon Confirms Withdrawal
A Pentagon spokesperson said: “While operational security precluded us from confirming the movement of our assets and forces in real-time, we can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States.”
Five men were originally arrested on 27 September on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and preparing terrorist acts under the Terrorism Act 2006, but were later released on conditional bail. Reports suggesting they were attempting to steal fuel remain unconfirmed. One of the men reportedly called police himself to report the incident.
A dual British-Iranian national was later arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. He has also been released on bail. Counter-terrorism police are still investigating what happened and whether a foreign state was involved.
The Pentagon said its B-1, B-2 and B-52 bomber crews “remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime.”
Iran Denies Involvement
Iran vehemently denies involvement in the alleged RAF Fairford plot. Its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said: “I can confirm Iran’s belief that releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states really says it all.” Its London embassy said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” speculation linking Iran to the arrests.
Tehran may see the United States’ withdrawal of bombers as a win. Stanisland Magazine has reached out for comment on the withdrawal.
