RAF Fairford Bomb Plot: Poor Security and What We Know

UK security services were caught off guard by a suspected attack on RAF Fairford, an air base used to launch US bombers striking Iran

The RAF Fairford explosive or bomb plot Has casted major concern throughout the UK and could have far-reaching consequences if suspicions turn out to be true. The air base is one of the most strategically important US-used air bases in Europe, carrying out bombing missions against Iran and across the Middle East.

Five men have been arrested under the Explosives Act and have been released on conditional bail as the country remains on high alert. We break down everything you want to know about the suspected terror plot on British soil.

The Timeline

In the early hours of the morning on Sunday 27 September 2026, police received a tip-off from a local resident who spotted three suspicious white vans allegedly travelling towards RAF Fairford, though other reports cite that they were blocking a road.

According to several sources, a local of Whelford attempted to contact RAF Fairford Military Police to no avail. She then contacted 999, who promptly responded.

The tip came from a local farmer, who said she saw hooded and/or masked men nearby, while other reports claim balaclava-laden individuals were spotted at the scene.

Armed officers swooped in to meet the suspects and arrested five men on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. Later, police further arrested the men on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

DAC Vicki Evans of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command said: “We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody. As you would expect we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident.”

Police say the perpetrators’ actions could have been “actively committed by proxies or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state”.

Approximately 85 households were evacuated at short notice, with residents reporting an abrupt “banging” on their doors by armed police to be told there was “no time” to explain. This points to the seriousness of the situation and the scope of a 400m cordon security services have put in place.

Gloucestershire Police released a statement about the incident: “We appreciate the disruption this will have caused and would like to reassure them we are working as quickly as we can to get them back in their properties.”

According to multiple reports, investigators found material using a remote-controlled bomb disposal robot consistent with improvised explosive devices, though tests are underway to determine exactly what the substances discovered are and what they’re capable of. Counter Terrorism Police are leading the investigation and say they’re not jumping to conclusions as to the motive.

However, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor updated the press on how police are approaching the investigation, saying that “this may be activity committed by proxies, or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly, working on behalf of a foreign state.”

On September 29, Marco Rubio released a statement appearing to back the police: “What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation,” before adding, “a lot more news that will come out on this in the days to come.”

Security Services Were Aware of the Plot

Initial reports suggested MI5 and counter-terrorism units were not aware of a suspected conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism; however, that now appears to be in doubt following comments by US President Donald Trump, who said: “It was fantastic. Working with Britain, it was an amazing job. We had them under investigation.” British police are yet to confirm Trump’s claims.

“They were looking to do big damage to our fort, and working with the British worked out great,” Trump continued, while UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting claimed that those who say the government had no clue about the conspiracy only had a “partial picture”, hinting that the authorities potentially knew in advance.

Who Could Be Behind the Attempted Attack?

Given current international tensions, it’s plausible to jump to Iran and/or Russia as a potential line of enquiry, with another being ideological extremism. However, given the impudence of those involved, allegedly wearing a balaclava or mask to carry out the attacks, in our view it does appear to point towards an Iranian operation or a state-proxy asset.

Adding to this, RAF Fairford has been mentioned by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a legitimate target, owing to the location allowing US bombers to participate in strikes on Iranian targets during the United States’ war with Iran.

Terrorists and extremists usually carry out attacks against public targets, however, honing in on an air force and defence base linked to attacks against another state could point towards an organised attempt to disrupt the logistics of conflict operations. Security has been increased at other US-linked UK bases, while the five men are still being questioned and the authorities have yet to reveal their findings, though police have now confirmed they are investigating a possible Iran link.
