The Hamas leader’s death was confirmed following an alleged encounter with trainee soldiers.
Israel claims they have killed Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, following an encounter with the group’s leader. Israeli authorities say they identified his body using DNA. Hamas are yet to comment.
He was found amongst rubble wearing a combat vest and holding a machine gun.
Palestinian and Israeli Death toll
The alleged encounter followed years of Israeli intelligence operations in collaboration with the United States. Tel Aviv’s leadership say he was the architect behind the October 7th 2023, attacks, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed.
In retaliation, the Israeli army, under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians. An additional 60,000 are estimated to have been killed as a result of forced starvation, bringing the total number to more than 100,000.
Global Reaction
Global reactions were swift and confident. Vice President Kamala Harris remarked: “He had American blood on his hands” and that “justice has been served.” She always said this will be a window to stop the war in Gaza.
Despite Harris’ comments, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu remained bullish: “We have demonstrated today that all those who try to harm us, this is what happens to them. And how the forces of good can always beat the forces of evil and darkness. The war is still ongoing, and it’s costly.”
He later said: “we will not stop the war. We will go into Rafah.”
Joe Biden said: “Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is dead. This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world.”
Regarding the occupation of Palestine, Sinwar was famously quoted as saying, “Does the world expect us to be well-behaved victims while we are getting killed? For us to be slaughtered without making a noise? We will defend our people with whatever weapons we have.”
