What You Need To Hear About Five 2024 Movies

Based on the latest trailers, we give our verdict on some of the most anticipated films.

This year has already seen a profusion of cinema, with some falling short of expectations; others have shown they’re well versed. However, five are still due to be released that movie buffs are fawning over.

So, without you having to glean some cheesy over the top YouTuber thumbnails, let’s jump in.

Joker: Folie À Deux

There’s been criticism that this movie was an unnecessary addition to the franchise, but excitement is still in the air for it.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film follows the two as they meet for the first time in Arkham Asylum. After their release from the institution, the pair begin a dysfunctional relationship built on chaos.

The trailer eschews quite a bit, and it’s clear Todd Phillips is steering it in a different direction. However, arguments that its predecessor was best left as a standalone are justified given there is only so much of an Arthur Fleck story to tell. Will they, won’t they introduce Batman? Who knows, but both are now overcooked.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Another sequel aiming to rekindle nostalgia finds its conduit in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the follow up to the smash 1988 comedy horror starring Michael Keaton. The actor reprises his role as a ghostly apparition as three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River following a family tragedy.

The movie stars Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Winona Ryder, Danny Devito, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Catherine O’Hara.

Sequels released this late on rarely hit a bullseye. Besides, the duration between the two films makes it feel more like a reboot than a follow up.

A Complete Unknown

If you like wooden acting, then might I interest you in a Timothee Chalamet production? The rigid actor has been cast as Bob Dylan in a biopic chronicling his meteoric rise to folk sensation. The film is directed by James Mangold (Walk The Line, Logan) and also stars Elle Fanning and Edward Norton.

Despite what appears to be a well produced piece of cinema, we just can’t help but feel Chalamet’s depiction feels forced. It will likely be worth a watch, but feel like it’s missing something due to this reason.

Kraven the Hunter

Based on the Marvel comic franchise, the film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the eponymous hero left for dead by his ultra masculine father, Russell Crowe.

The story centres around Sergei Kravinoff who aims to prove he is the greatest hunter in the world. Be warned, this is probably going to be another CGI monster fest with some epic SFX fails. And with Disney at the helm, disaster is on the cards as they continue to ruin a list of intellectual properties.

Transformers One

The Transformers community are losing it over this one, and the fan base is polarised. One half can’t wait to see it, while the other longs for a nostalgic bout of generation one. I agree with the latter, for the most part.

Transformers has lost its lustre thanks to some experimental projects such as the tragedy and monumental monstrosity that is Beast Wars. Like most franchises, the foundations of the cybertronian story are distinct – with the mark being missed on several occasions. It was only a matter of time before we arrived at what appears to be Disney Pixar. Let’s hope we are wrong. The characters are voiced by Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlet Johansson and Keagan Michael-Kay,
