Kane Parsons and A24 team up to bring the viral hit series to the big screen.
A24‘s latest film, Backrooms, plays on the urban legend of a creepypasta story. It’s a tension-set trailer with a fitting narration, one played against the paranoia of a viral sensation that still circulates on the internet to this day. Here’s what we know.
‘Backrooms’: The Plot
As an adaptation of the Backrooms phenomenon, it’s visually set against the liminal doorways it presents. In the trailer, we hear a seemingly obsessed therapy patient describe the architecture of the structure he stumbled upon. Despite not being a fresh story, it’s refreshing to see Hollywood embrace the originator of the concept to direct it, reflecting public desire over reboots.
While the visuals do seem to lack the grittiness of the original story, they do present a jarring, almost disorienting aesthetic, albeit more polished.
Production Details and Cast
Backrooms is directed by Kane Parsons, the creator of the original series, and is written by Will Soodik (Borgia, Ash vs Evil Dead), so make of that what you will.
The film stars an ensemble cast, including award-winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.
- Chiwetel Ejiofor
- Renate Reinsve
- Mark Duplass
- Finn Bennett
- Lukita Maxwell
- Avan Jogia
Release Date
Backrooms is scheduled for a cinematic release in theatres from May 29th 2026.
