Cherise Michelle revives classic R&B DNA for a mellifluous sonic experience
R&B continues to reinvent itself, and now this honour falls to Indiana-born, LA-based vocalist Cherise Michelle. The singer recaptures the fortune of a sonically shifting sound on “heartbeat”, with a velvety work of music that’s harmonically driven by her emotional direction, which she describes as ‘soft violence.’
What “heartbeat” Sounds Like
Chronicling a familiar set of events, Michelle channels her own experience and communicates what she says is a “thin line between love and hate” that keeps the “emotional cycle going between two people”. The artist explains: “Whether it was me blocking or changing my number, or him nonchalantly shutting me out and showing a lack of expressiveness, the goal was to communicate the mental calculations I felt like we were playing with each other.”
Instrumentally, “heartbeat” stitches elements of jazz, 1980s/90s soul and R&B together, while Michelle’s voice helps add a layer of sublime delivery. Her vocals fuse a classic blend of recognisable influences over a nostalgic production performed by a team of talented musicians.
