Clayface: Watch the DC Villain Descend Into a Chaotic Tailspin

DC Comics fans get another look at the world of Batman villains, with James Watkins directing Clayface.

The DC reboot under James Gunn continues with Clayface. The official trailer has been released, with fans applauding the promotional spot as a great way to tease the movie without revealing too much.

Many films have suffered from overexposure, with Marvel Studios producing too much too soon across movies, animation, and television, leading to audience fatigue. However, it seems DC has struck a perfect balance with a carefully curated slate of commissions, licensing, and live-action entertainment.

The Plot: Body-Horror Meets Comic Book Anarchy

In the trailer, we see the villain’s agony as he is transformed into a monstrous figure. If you follow the Batman comics, you’ll know that the origin of Clayface comes from Matt Hagen, an actor whose life spirals out of control after he is disfigured in a horrific car crash.

This prompts him to turn to a scientist — Dr. Emile Dorian — to perform experimental surgery, transforming him into a shape-shifting mass of unstable material. We then see him rise to fame once again, only to lose himself in the chaotic tailspin where he can no longer recognise himself.

Clayface is pitched as a Cronenberg-style body horror story, though the CGI could take it down a notch or two unless practical effects are used more extensively than digital rendering.

Cast and Production Details

The movie is directed by James Watkins, whose work on Speak No Evil, episodes of McMafia, and Black Mirror intrigued DC and Warner Bros. enough to hire him for the new film. The project stars Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen), English actors Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17), Eddie Marsan (21 Grams), and Max Minghella (The Social Network), and was shot on location in UK cities Liverpool, Manchester, London, and Stockport between Aug 31, 2025, and November 1, 2025.

The Batman: Part II Tie-In?

Some have considered Clayface could be the main villain for The Batman: Part II, given Matt Reeves has publicly stated the antagonist will be something not previously attempted in a Dark Knight storyline. However, recent comments by Sebastien Stan suggest something more existential: “I’ve been also training a lot for this ‘summer experience’ that’s about to happen. It’s just going to be so crazy. People have no idea what’s coming. And I mean that very well. I don’t even mean to tease anything.”

Unpredictable Story

So who could it be? Fans have speculated that Clayface, the Court of Owls, and Man-Bat could be on the table, given that the usual suspects have already been used, including the Joker, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy. However, it’s also possible that Reeves’ statements could be intentionally misleading, or he is misdirecting to protect the integrity of the project.

Either way, the currently confirmed cast remains Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne, Batman), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon), and Colin Farrell (Penguin). If the familiar antagonists return, it will need a strong screenplay to make the characters feel fresh, as audiences have poorly received recent iterations.

Release Date

Clayface is scheduled for release in theatres around Halloween on October 23rd 2026.
