Spitting bars of fire, many are beginning to recognise the lyricist’s skill, including her industry colleagues. Those unacquainted with the Floridian rapper are also starting to take note thanks to her brace of quality releases.

Today, she dropped a teaser trailer for her upcoming music video Denial is a River. Here’s what you should know about it.

What is the Track About?

It’s one of the standout songs from her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, a project that has received widespread acclaim. The song is inspired by a journal entry where she details a personal story in a humorous and honest way.

Doechii explains the meaning behind Denial is a River.

Paying homage to a notable Wendy Williams interview, she mixes comedy with self-examination. Described as a “diary entry,” she credits its inspiration to rappers like Slick Rick.

The Teaser Clip and Cameos

It opens with an establishing shot of a detached house, making it clear we’re in for a retro-style visual based on the hit show Family Matters.

We then transition inside, where we see Doechii entering the front door. There we witness a collective of people, including frequent collaborator DJ Miss Milan.

The video is stylised in the vein of an early 1990s sitcom and features cameo appearances from Zack Fox, Schoolboy Q, SiR, Rickey Thompson, Baby Tate, Teezo Touchdown. It is scheduled to premiere on January 2nd, 2025.

The announcement was made on social media.

Album Success

Her debut mixtape has been positively received by both outside and within the community. Blending a mix of R&B tracks with hip-hop, she deliberately treads into a unique style she is now synonymous with.

Despite being released on Top Dawg Entertainment, it wasn’t as successful as her fellow label mate’s projects, though it solidified her spot as one to watch in the genre.

Alligator Bites Never Heal features 19 songs, and aesthetically leans in to a different vibe of mixtape. Visually, the creative output mirrors the same. Other singles taken from the album include Nissan Altima and Boom-Bap. You can stream or purchase vinyl copies from her.
