Ed Sheeran addresses crowds at his Lincoln Financial Field concert in Philadelphia

Following the withdrawal of support acts including Macklemore, Aaron Rowe, Finneas and Lukas Graham, as well as his own band, Beoga, from “The Loop Tour”, Ed Sheeran finally broke his silence during his performance at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The singer delivered a speech but has once again encountered significant backlash.

The singer addressed what he called a “catastrophic” situation in Gaza and acknowledged the October 7 attacks, but stopped short of calling Israel’s “disproportionate” response a genocide.

Public Response

Social media was quick to point out that the “Lego House” singer was reading from a teleprompter, with one user calling him “shameless”, while others felt it “did not change anything” and that his position still sits as “pro-Israeli” conclusion.

Others claimed the Divide singer was pressured by pro-Israeli billionaire Robert Kraft, whom Sheeran is also friends with. Sheeran previously described Kraft as “super sweet” after performing at his wedding.

Many criticised his stance, pointing to his past support for political causes, including Ukraine. Singer Paloma Faith said: “I did play at a concert with Ed Sheeran to raise money for Ukraine, so he wasn’t apolitical by doing that,” while Massive Attack said: “‘Neutrality’ in the face of the slaughter of more than 20,000 children can never be neutrality.” Billy Bragg was more forthcoming and simply remarked, “If I was Ed Sheeran, I’d swallow my pride and cancel the tour.”
