ENNY returns after teasing fans on social media with video clips of herself and a friend working in the custodial arts, sporting a yellow outfit, telling followers that she had started a cleaning business. However, in her own words, she said: “Jig Is Up I guess…” confirming: “No new Business, just New music!” before announcing her new single: “Selfridges.”

Review and Verdict

In true Enny fashion, the track features her trademark slow-jam production — courtesy of Gotts Street Park — airing introspective rhymes on the relatability of routine. In the video, she and a friend run The Peng Black Girls Cleaning Company, going through the day to day motions.

Channelling both struggle and resilience, the rapper licks off lines such as “Still I’m here losing my mind… DragonBall Supersaiyan” and “Before I swim and I drown, I’ll raise my hand to the clouds” underlining vulnerability while taking stock of what’s to come.

In a statement, the London lyricist said of Selfridges:

“Take people on a journey of creating my own business outside of music, which when announcing my career pivot completely took me by surprise, with the outpour of love. I’m not quitting music but thank you for all your support in my current and new ventures.”

The track is an anomaly within the scene — her cadence is something few are offering right now. A starved audience of fans is largely consuming but not listening — seemingly afraid of rap’s artistic potential. ENNY is one of the few rappers with a pace and love for hip-hop, with her music — especially this new single — a tribute to her skill.
