Mayor Zohran Mamdani and rapper Nas talk about the past, present, and future of hip-hop
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently sat down with rap legend Nas to talk all things hip-hop and its place in New York City and beyond. As a lifelong hip-hop fan himself, the Mayor was clearly enthused by the topic of conversation and by who the discourse was being held with.
Keeping Hip-Hop Universal
As the city’s representative and leader, Mamdani had solid words about where and how the city should be viewed: “We can’t be content with [New York City] having been the birthplace of hip-hop. We want it to still be the home,” he said. He later related that NYC should remain a place of inspiration, and that it cannot shut out artists on account of rising affluence: “If we allow New York to become such an expensive city that art becomes a luxury good, then we are depriving future generations from the magic of art.”
Nas was equally passionate about the situation and said: “Hip-hop unveils the truth. Hip-hop tells you exactly what your city looks like, sounds like, feels like.” He then shared personal experience and how his viewpoint has shaped his perspective on the next generation: “There’s more to life than just surviving. It’s all about the youth and how we get them to avoid the mistakes that so many people made. I know so many people from this neighborhood that had so much potential, but there was nothing showing them a different way.”
