Shock release stuns the hip-hop world, reinvigorating the rap scene.

The West Coast rapper caps off an eventful day for hip-hop with the surprise release of new album GNX.

The trailer for GNX

While many were preparing for the reveal of another project, Kendrick Lamar (surname Duckworth) caught us all off guard with his sixth studio album, the first since his 2022 release, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

What You Need To Know

Did anyone predict a sudden release from the West Coast rapper today? I didn’t think so. Surprise drops have become the new norm and they appear to be working.

The album is distributed through pgLang and Interscope Records following his departure from Top Dawg. He is, what many consider to be the main event right now, at least in the hip-hop scene. With that in mind, you can understand the battle for his signature following his resignation from TDE.

Lil Wayne Controversy

In the opening track, wacced out murals, the rapper addresses the story surrounding Lil Wayne (Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) and the Super Bowl fiasco.

On it he says, “Used to bump Tha Carter Ill, I held my Rollie chain proud / irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.” He later highlights how Nas was the only one to congratulate him on his achievement.

Responding to the track, Dwayne said, “Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love”

The Cover Art

The artwork is a minimal yet raw depiction photographed by Dave Free, with perhaps a hark back to his earlier project good kid, m.A.A.d city.

It features Lamar leaning back against the classic Buick GNX car, wearing a black leather jacket and a white T-shirt adorned with a graphic. He is also sporting a boxing belt, which we assume is a reference to his class level in the genre.

What Does GNX Stand For?

The title is an abbreviation for ‘Grand National Experimental.’ Considering the album artwork features a Buick GNX, there is likely a connotation between the artist’s lyrical prowess and the high performance the vehicle is known for.

It is equipped with a turbocharged 3.8L V6 engine rated at 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. Make of that what you will.

Who Features on The Album?

The project features appearances from SZA, who performs on two tracks, Gloria and Luther.

Jazz instrumentalist Kamasi Washington contributes to the track TV Off. Jack Antonoff, renowned for his work with Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, also collaborated on its production alongside producers Sounwave (who introduced him to Lamar), and DJ Mustard.

Where to Buy on Vinyl, CD, and Cassette?

Right now a vinyl and CD edition of the album is not available. But if it does hit the market, it will likely be stocked on the Interscope Store.

For now, you can listen to K.Dot’s new music on Spotify, Apple and Tidal among others. A clean and explicit version is available.
