Looking for new movies in January? We break down the four best must-see films to kick off the new year.

January is a slow-burn month; no one has any money, and to top things off, you’re bored! But never fear, we’ve compiled some of the best in new cinema to motivate the cogs in your brain through a list of the top four films you can see next month in the UK.

“Night Swim”

This horror movie was originally a short film created and directed by Bryce McGuire and friend, Rod Blackhurst in 2014. It is distributed by major supernatural movie-churning production company Blumhouse, whose product is not always the best, though on occasion sieve out some gems. Perhaps this is one of them?

The film follows the protagonist Ray Waller, who is a former baseball player forced into retirement by a degenerative illness. He moves into a new house with his wife and two children, complete with a swimming pool he hopes will aid his physical therapy. However, their new home may be the residence of evil forces beyond their control.

“The Boy and the Heron”

Though it has been a while since its release in Japan, its cinema run in the West is relatively fresh. The Boy and the Heron is the highly anticipated new anime film from Studio Ghibli, directed by none other than the genre’s expert in the field; Hayao Miyazaki. Though it was rumoured to be his last film, he has since put those rumours to bed following a statement proclaiming he has a torrent of ideas in the works.

Set during the Pacific War (Miyazaki’s favourite period), it is set around the life of Mahito Maki, who tragically loses his mother in a fire and subsequently moves to the countryside with both his father, Shoichi, and new stepmother Natsuko. Once there, he encounters an enigmatic grey heron who leads him to a tower that has been sealed for some time.

Once inside, he embarks on an enchanting journey, where he finds himself in an alternate reality-filled adventure. It is alleged to be Miyazaki’s return to form as he revisits the charm of captivating animation filled with whispers of fantasy fables.

“The Beekeeper”

After releasing “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch”, Jason Statham went into a downward spiral, akin to Gerrard Butler’s reach for low-budget and uninteresting movie plots. However, that seems to have changed, with the frontman starring in David Ayer‘s new action thriller “The Beekeeper.“

The synopsis is rather simple, which is an exciting revenge plot after his neighbour dies by suicide following a phishing scam. “Mr Clay“ (Statham), goes on a rampage to exact vengeance against the culprits who catalysed the downfall of his friend.

Before finishing my epic sigh upon watching the trailer and seeing his face flash on the silver screen, my perception rapidly changed. Provided this is not a case of the trailer being better than the main event, we could be in for a fun romp.

“I.S.S.”

This looks to be one of few original sci-fi movies to be released in 2024, and alas, it will be available to watch as soon as January. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the film stars Ariana Debose (of Hamilton fame), who is an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (I.S.S.), when a world war breaks out below them on Earth.

As it is populated by different nationalities, each government asks their crew to take control of it, hoping to gain an advantage below.
