Bassam Tariq gears up for an explosive release in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, starring Mahershala Ali
Mahershala Ali’s movie portfolio is a long and chunky list of watchable movies, and his latest features the Academy Award-winning actor as a conflicted Muslim in a place of personal adversity. Having trained for a year to take on the role of British vampire hunter Blade, only for Marvel to cancel any idea of it for the foreseeable future, Ali was understandably disappointed.
In his words, “If they wanted to do it, we would have done it.” However, this loss becomes Ali’s gain as he takes on the role of Latif in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, where the actor shows them exactly what they’re missing.
The Plot and Production Details
Directed by Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli), the film, set in Houston, Texas, follows Latif, a Muslim whose career as a hitman conflicts with his personal beliefs. However, after his wife dies, he must protect his children as he deals with the life he chose. Alongside Mahershala Ali, the film also stars Giancarlo Esposito, John Cho (rumoured to be playing a radical pastor) and Tramell Tillman.

The role Ali takes on is unusually broad; in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, he is set to traverse a range of emotions, including grief and anger, the role of a father, as well as explosive action. Ali agrees; in a recent interview with GQ magazine, the actor said: “I was really attracted to the challenge of playing a character that felt so stretched.”
When writing the script, Tariq said he did not have a name for the protagonist, saying, “I just wrote ‘Mahershala’”. He was originally set to direct Marvel’s Blade reboot alongside Ali, but when production fell apart, they later reunited for this original story. From the trailer, we can only assume what might have been. With music by Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and cinematography by Katelin Arizmendi (Swallow, Cam), the long list of talent makes this a date worth saving.
Release Date
The film is scheduled to be released on 25 September 2026 via Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios.
