Marvel releases the first trailer for an exciting Avengers: Doomsday – a one-trick pony
The latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer is here, and after a day of pondering what to anticipate, we can expect a lot, though much of it is cooked before it’s served. Robert Downey Jr. returns, but not as Tony Stark, but as the villainous Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom. The trailer is action-packed, loaded with special effects and expected pithy quotables.

While we’re all getting our rocks off to the new Doomsday trailer, there are still some things that really don’t excite me about it. Too much too soon is the name of the game, and the presentation is overwhelming; it sounds like a Super Bowl halftime show, with too many bells and whistles from a place that feels eccentric, exciting, and boresome. It’s no doubt going to be good, but good is not enough.
We need a Marvel reboot, and that comes with some costs, ones that Disney will not want to count. When Marvel Comics began securing lucrative licensing opportunities, heavyweight creative talent accepted roles and committed to the stories. We ended up with some blockbuster titles, including Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man; it didn’t matter who was cast because the engine room was stacked with people who cared, obsessed with either the characters, the comics, or the film itself. But the income began inspiring overproduction and a lack of restraint.
Fast-forward two decades, and we have rushed productions, over-sharing, and a place where social media comes before the release of the film. Less is more may be cliché, but it is a truth that will forever be accurate. Studios are revealing way too much, and plot twists become watered down or result in an audience of bland faces. Superheroes don’t ever feel special anymore when crossovers are all too familiar.

We can all confidently assume there will be a plot twist involving Downey Jr. and Dr. Doom, so why reveal this casting choice so soon? Disney has obviously lost the plot in recent years, and that disease is being passed on to its IPs with a demonic propensity. If they really want to fix their legacy, they need to take their foot off the accelerator and build hype through calculated seeding.
