Disney and the Russo Brothers gamble on another fresh wave of worrisome storytelling
Yes, yes, we’re all here watching the same thing. Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, is back in the latest instalment of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Fans are quite rightly upset, given the events of End Game, but hold your horses, there’s more than a year to wait, and we’ve only seen one minute of a teaser. Let’s jump in.
Captain America aka Steve Rogers, is Back
In the trailer, we see Captain America riding his motorcycle through rural farmland until he arrives at a small house. He then parks and fastens his helmet to his bike, with a shot focusing on his wedding ring. He then enters a house, picks up his iconic costume, and then slowly places it back into a storage box. We then see him rocking and smiling at a baby, muslin in tow. The teaser ends with the words “Steve Rogers Will Return In Avengers: Doomsday.”
Fans have gone into a complete meltdown over this news. However, before you work up a sweat, it looks like a different time period rather than the present day. You only have to look at the colour grading, the motorcycle, and the fact that Rogers is on screen at all. It could just be a flashback to a time when he welcomed a child — we don’t even know if this is his offspring at all. It could be a nephew, a niece. Perhaps he time-travelled? After all, we are watching a comic book adaptation where Doctor Strange exists. My personal take is it’s a flashback designed to trigger conversation. Job done. But we do have another theory.
The Avengers: Doomsday Plot
While the official plot is being kept under wraps, we have our own theories. The strongest being that an alternate timeline emerges from colliding universes (incursions), leading to, as discussed, another timeline/reality in which CA lives a simpler, more peaceful life. Of course, this will be upended by the arrival of Dr Doom (Robert Downey Junior), whose life as Iron Man turns towards a villainy.
Disney and Marvel: A Match Made in Money
But let’s talk about the elephant in the room: these films need to go on hiatus. They’re contributing little to cinema beyond a gargantuan pay packet for both its studios and actors.
These productions are rushed and bloated with characters, and it’s bewildering that they continue to be made at all. The only thing keeping them alive is the same reason Avatar still exists: curiosity.
The Verdict
Hype-meter
Superhero stories work best when the odds are stacked against the protagonist. One hero, one underdog facing an overwhelming villain or even a fleet of enemies. This is half the reason why Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy were such fiery spectacles, and truly fit for the theatre. Marvel and Disney are ruining their own hype through Comic-Con appearances, leaks, trailers, and corny behind-the-scenes teasers. When you show too much, audiences don’t want it as much.
In contrast, the vast majority of contemporary film is written for streaming, and it ages very quickly. This film is another vending machine option to fill up Disney Plus’ growing catalog of terrifyingly rushed intellectual properties. If you want a great adaptation? I recommend actual comic books. They’re currently on a roll!
Release Date
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for a theatrical release on the 18th December 2026.
