Mike P. Nelson returns to the director’s chair for his new horror-film, Beware Boiúna
Beware Boiúna is one of the few horror films set to grace the silver screen at Halloween, with a huge dip in the output of monster-supernatural movies during the scary season. With a trailer piquing our interest, does that intrigue dip at all?
The Plot
A local mission in the Amazon rainforest sees a team of doctors come face-to-face with a monstrous creature called the Titan, locally known as the Boiúna. Their arrival at their destination draws the attention of the local legend, which is hungry to devour each and every single one of them.

Now, if there were an Anaconda remake, fans of the original would eat well from this instead of a subpar rendition. If we’re being honest, this may be what you’re looking for — snooty film buffs, look away; this one’s not for you.
Boiúna comes from Amazonian/Brazilian folklore: a supernatural, serpent-like cryptid skulking in the region. And what’s to say there isn’t one loitering in the rainforests of the Amazon? I digress. Beware Boiúna is for those who like a bit of cheese in their sandwich, and it definitely ticks all the boxes of a fun romp blended with elements from classic films such as Predator and Jurassic Park.
This film seems to get it right, with some atmospheric compositions, intriguing lighting, and a boilerplate for those who buy into titles such as The Meg or Congo. This Titanoboa-like creature looks set to clean up at the box office, and though it’s likely to be no masterpiece, it will surely entertain.
Production Details
Mike P. Nelson (Silent Night, Deadly Night) directs, while frequent collaborator Nick Junkersfeld takes the helm of cinematography. Beware Boiúna was authentically shot on location in the Amazon rainforest / Curuçá River region, Brazil, between October and December 2024. Problems with securing distribution prolonged the film’s release, with Lionsgate only picking up the rights in February 2025. Let’s hope it hasn’t aged badly since then. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on 2 October 2026
